The study A Review of History and Architecture of Roofing Slates: Impact on the Unesco World Heritage List, cited by the scientific journal Geoheritage, highlights the importance of slate roofing as “an essential component of humanity’s historical and architectural heritage.” This is affirmed by researchers Víctor Cárdenes, Celia Campa, and Luis Pando from the Department of Geology at the University of Oviedo.

The study reflects the “undisputed dominance” of Spanish slate in the global market, whose “best showcase is the buildings and monuments included on the UNESCO World Heritage List.” Within this list, the researchers have identified fake or imitation slate through the use of artificial intelligence techniques to determine the materials used in roofing construction.
