The slate Cluster of Galicia is composed of more than 40 companies dedicated to the extraction, processing, and commercialization of slate, accounting for 90% of the total production in the region.

Spanish production, which amounted to nearly 460,000 tonnes in 2023, represents 85% of the world’s total slate production, of which 60% corresponds to natural slate from Galicia. In 2023, a total of 437,186 tonnes were exported, valued at €376,584,309, and up to November of last year, 2024, 348,485 tonnes left our borders, valued at €341,420,764.

Galician slate is distinguished by quality, durability, and a long- lasting guarantee of usefulness and resistance. Its unique properties represent the primary competitive advantage over slate from other countries and alternative materials.

The objectives of the Slate Cluster aim to promote and drive the sales of Galician slate in the current market. These objectives can be summarized as increasing the competitiveness of the slate sector, with an emphasis on promoting and encouraging the implementation of specific innovative projects.

These goals respond to the new needs of the slate industry, for which a strategic has been developed, carrying out actions in the fields of sustainability and the environment, training, promotion, regulation and technical aspects, as well as R&D&I.

SLATE INSTALLATION

A proper slate installation is essential to ensure the durability and minimal maintenance of any roof.

The objectives sough in the installation of a slate roof are water tightness, impermeability, and therefore its durability. This is not provided by the stone itself; it can only be achieved through proper installation on site, taking into account that the most important factor in designing a roof is capillarity, which is the key distinguished characteristic of slate compared the Technical School of Installers at the Slate Technology Center to offer specialized training courses in slate roof installation.

The Slate Cluster works actively with the Technical School for Installers of the Slate Technology Centre to offer specialized training programs in slate roof installation.
